FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Disc golf is a fun sport that is easy to learn! You can find disc golf courses all around the world and it is relatively cheap since all you need is one disc to start with. It gets you moving and is suitable for everyone, so we suggest you get out there and give it a try!
Why disc golf?
Avery Jenkins is one of the key figures in disc golf. He was the 2009 the world champion and comes from a disc golf family that has been playing since the beginning of disc golf.
Avery is very active in the community and travels all over the world designing courses for Disc Golf Park, a course design brand of Discmania. He is also one of the top course collectors in the world and uses Udisc to record his journey. By the end of 2024, he has played over 1600 courses.
Avery was also inducted to the Disc Golf Hall of Fame in 2025.
Who is Avery Jenkins?
It is widely agreed that “Steady” Ed Headrick is the father of disc golf. He invented the first “pole hole” or commonly known as the disc golf basket. It is difficult to say, who invented the game of disc golf since people played disc golf with frisbees long before the actual game was formalized. The earliest versions of disc golf can be dated back to the 60’s.
The beginning of the modern era of disc golf can be said to have started in 1975 when Steady Ed installed the first permanent disc golf course in Oak Grove, Pasadena in Los Angeles, California. When the “pole hole” was installed in Oak Grove, the masses started gathering around this newly found sport.
The success of the sport among other frisbee sports led to the formation of the first disc golf company, the DGA, and soon the foundations of the PDGA, Professional Disc Golf Association, were laid down in 1976.
The full history of disc golf is long and winding, but Pulsea is proud to be a part of the legacy as the world's first and biggest online academy for disc golfers.
What is the history of disc golf?
The only thing you need is a disc and a way to get to a course. Discs you can find from your local disc golf retailer, sporting goods store or online from a variety of shops. Courses you can find almost anywhere. Even Antarctica has one disc golf course at McMurdo Station.
You can also play disc golf without a target basket, invent courses with your friends and family, and use a so-called object target to determine the end of a hole. Only your imagination is the limit!
What are the bare basics to start disc golf?
Absolutely not! The main goal of disc golf is to have fun! If you feel like you just want to enjoy nature and throw some plastic while doing it, it is perfectly fine. Disc golf is what you make of it. Many beginners find it helpful when they don’t have to concentrate on getting a good score but just learn the ropes first. Make it simple and make it fun!
Do I need to keep score?
On a course you start from hole #1 and progress from there depending on how many holes there are on a course you are playing. Start from a designated teeing area and progress through the fairway and complete the hole by putting the disc to the basket. The goal is to make it from the teeing area to the basket with the least amount of throws. Some obstacles and hindrances make the game more challenging. You can find the rules and guides on how to play them correctly from Pulsea.com.
How do I play the game?
No, you do not have to if you don’t want to. Sometimes we only have time to play a couple of holes and that’s perfectly fine! It’s better to play a couple of holes than no holes at all, right? Just make sure when you exit the course safely and don’t put yourself in a situation where you might get hit by a flying disc.
Do I have to play the whole course?
By any measure, disc golf is cheap. You can get a used disc for as cheap as $5 and a new base plastic disc costs around $10,90. There are places to get used discs like the Capty app and some of the disc golf retail stores sell used discs too.
Most of the courses are free to play, so there is practically no cost to start disc golf.
Is it expensive to play disc golf?
It depends on your general level of athleticism, but disc golf is quite easy to get started with. Some people pick it right away, and some take a little more time, but if you are interested, then we are sure that anyone can pick up a disc and start playing. You can get some basic ideas on how to start from our free beginner lessons right here!
Is disc golf hard for beginners?
Disc golf can’t be considered a hard sport, but it definitely gets you out and moving. Because disc golf is affordable and easy to access, it can be the sport that suits people not interested in traditional sports like jogging or going to the gym. It has the benefit of moving you
