Lesson - Putting stances

1

Lesson - Putting stances

1

In this lesson we go through the basic stances Thomas Gilbert uses. Thomas mainly putts on a staggered stance but uses also straddle stance if there are obstacles preventing the use of a staggered stance.

3.

00:32

Lesson - Loading

1

Lesson - Loading

1

Talking about loading the energy to our back leg. We do this by moving our body slightly back while bending the knee a little bit. Again, this is an athletic movement as if you are ready to start running.

00:28

Lesson an exercise - Lower body extension

1

Lesson an exercise - Lower body extension

1

In this set, we talk about the next step which is the extension of the lower body. We have loaded our bodyweight to the back leg and now we extend forward.

Lesson & Exercise - Arm extension

1

Lesson & Exercise - Arm extension

1

Now we talk about the next part in the chain. We concentrate on finding the arm and how to move it separately.

Lesson & Exercise - Arm extension

7.

01:01

Lesson - Grip

1

Lesson - Grip

1

We are talking about the grip or how to hold the putter. This is individual for everyone since everyone has different-sized hands so make sure you try out what is comfortable for you.

The main thing is that you have a firm grip and you have good control over your putter.

Lesson - Grip

8.

01:11

Lesson - Wrist extension

1

Lesson - Wrist extension

1

Thomas Gilbert talks about the next link in the chain eg. the wrist extension.

Lesson - Wrist extension

9.

00:53

Exercise - Wrist extension

1

Exercise - Wrist extension

1

Thomas Gilbert teaches you a great exercise on learning the wrist extension. This is a really good exercise and it is easy to practice practically anywhere!

10.

01:27

Lesson - Fingers

1

Lesson - Fingers

1

Talking about the role of the fingers as the producer of spin in our putting motion.

Lesson - Fingers

11.

00:44

Lesson - Follow through

1

Lesson - Follow through

1

An the last is the follow through. The putting follow through is a bit different from driving follow through, but it is there. It's more like an idea that you are reaching through the putt towards the basket and not stopping the motion half way.

Lesson - Follow through

12.

01:13

Lesson - Putting summary

1

A short summary of all the parts we have gone through so far.

Straddle stance putting

Straddle stance putting

1.

Lesson - Foot placement

1

Lesson - Foot placement

1

Now we talk about the straddle stance foot placement. The width of the stance is naturally unique for everyone and the best way to find a comfortable and stable position can be found using these pointers.

Lesson - Foot placement

1.

00:36

Lesson - Loading from the straddle stance

1

Lesson - Loading from the straddle stance

1

Now we load power to our legs by squatting down. This enables us to use our body to produce power over just the arm or the wrist.

Lesson - Loading from the straddle stance

2.

00:31

Lesson - Extending your putt

1

Lesson - Extending your putt

1

We have loaded the power to our legs so now we extend. Try a couple of times to get the push to be stable and not wobbly or favoring one side over the other. The goal is to push straight forward.

Lesson - Extending your putt

3.

00:33

Lesson - Upperbody extending

1

Lesson - Upperbody extending

1

The next part is to incorporate the same motion of the upper body that we learned earlier to the chain of motions. We extend our upper body towards the basket as we are pushing with our lower body to produce power.

Lesson - Upperbody extending

4.

00:26

Lesson - Straddle summary

1

Lesson - Straddle summary

1

Now we put everything we learned to practice. We take it slow at first and build the chain of motions. Don't be discouraged if this feels odd at first. We remember to think about the parts when building this technique and slowly start to feel the energy transferring to the disc from our lower body. Hone in the technique from 5m or 15ft so you can learn the motions first and make sure every repetition counts.

Lesson - Nose angle

1

Lesson - Nose angle

1

Talking about the manipulation of the nose angle of the disc. This is a good skill to have when we want to adjust the nose angle when putting either uphill or downhill.

Lesson - Nose angle

2.

01:27

Lesson - Nose down

1

Lesson - Nose down

1

In some special cases like putting over an obstacle, you need to manipulate the nose angle. Putting a high release angle with the nose down will result in a more quickly dropping disc to the basket.

00:41

Exercise - Practicing putting behind an obstacle

1

Exercise - Practicing putting behind an obstacle

1

Here we talk about the adjustments and practicing putting behind an obstacle. It is a crucial skill to have since we don't always have a clear sight of the basket. Practicing this kind of putts is good so we are at least ready when the situation arises.

4.

00:49

Lesson & Exercise - Putting game

1

Lesson & Exercise - Putting game

1

When practicing putting it is good to have a clear idea what you are practicing. This is one putting game Thomas executes so he can keep the putting interesting and at the same time challenging so the learning curve is always up.

01:14

Lesson & Exercise - Stability

1

Lesson & Exercise - Stability

1

Thomas talks about stability and the importance of maintaining a stable stance. He also gives us a quick tip on how to practice your balance when we are not playing disc golf.

Lesson & Exercise - Stability

3.

00:55

Lesson - Lower body rotation

1

Lesson - Lower body rotation

1

Thomas talks about his way of transferring power from the lower body to his technique. We have a good position and we have a good brace in our front leg. Next we start to rotate our lower body and hips to make that linear motion into a circular motion.

Lesson - Lower body rotation

4.

00:46

Exercise - Lower body rotation

1

Exercise - Lower body rotation

1

Good and simple exercise for us to visualize the lower body rotation and get the feel for the movement before we start building the whole chain of motions together.

00:37

Lesson - Reachback

1

Lesson - Reachback

1

Let's talk about reachback. The reachback allows us to have more power in our throw and when executed correctly, it also gives us accuracy. Here Thomas shows us his take on reachback and where it should be.

Lesson - Reachback

6.

01:08

Exercise - Timing and positioning drill

1

Exercise - Timing and positioning drill

1

Now we drill the timing of the reachback and the last step. It is important to get the timing right before the pull-through motion of the actual throw, so there is no extra movements involved that create noise in your driving technique.

7.

01:03

Lesson - Weight transfer

1

00:31

Exercise - Weight transfer

1

Exercise - Weight transfer

1

A good way to practice the weight transfer is to rock back and forth to get the feel for the motion. Here Thomas shows us how to do it.

00:24

Lesson - Power pocket

1

Lesson - Power pocket

1

Here we talk about the power pocket. It is very crucial part to understand where the pocket is to have the maximal and clean power transfer from the lower body to our disc.

Lesson - Power pocket

10.

01:01

Lesson - Pulling through the power pocket

1

Lesson - Pulling through the power pocket

Exercise - Pulling through the power pocket

1

Exercise - Pulling through the power pocket

1

Here is a good exercise to keep your hand in check. Please do not hurt yourself by doing this exercise. The idea is to give you a clear frame of reference when practicing but the point is not to hit your hand to the wall until you get it right. Start slow and gradually speed up, but again, do not hit your hand to the wall.

Now it's time to put all the pieces together. First practice without the steps to get the timing right, then add the last steps and finally do the full run-up. Exercise with precision and intent, and be mindful of the movements. We can record our performance with a cellphone to have more analysis tools on the key points provided in the end of this exercise video. Enjoy!
